Jenny and Taryn's Avon 3-Day Adventure

The weekend of April 26-28, 2002, we, Jenny Ross and Taryn Deaton, will participate in a monumental event where we will walk 60 miles from Fort Worth to Dallas, Texas in order to raise money to help fight breast cancer. This event, the Avon Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk, will involve an estimated 4,000 walkers and volunteers. The net proceeds will support the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade's mission to fund access to care and find a cure for breast cancer, with a focus on medically underserved women. Between 1993 and the fall of 2001 the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade has raised more than $150 million net in the U.S.

We have very personal reasons for participating in the event, and we both view it as a physical, mental, emotional, and financial challenge. Some background on us: Our friendship began as members of the National Women’s Fraternity, Zeta Tau Alpha at Southwestern University (Jenny is Taryn’s little sister in the fraternity). We both got involved with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in college, as it is ZTA’s national philanthropy. After graduation, we have remained close friends and have continued to participate in ZTA alumnae activities and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure together.

We have seen the effects of cancer on our family and friends, and realize that we, along with other women, are at risk for breast cancer, since one in eight women develops breast cancer during their lifetime. We both feel that because breast cancer affects so many people directly and indirectly, we need to do something to help make a difference. The Avon 3-Day is the perfect opportunity to profoundly make that difference.
